I am so saddened to hear of Mr. Ratliff’s death. His jeweler’s shop was next door to my father’s (Ted Taylor) barber shop in Haysi. In the early 50’s I attended kindergarten at Haysi and since my parents only had one car, Daddy took me to school and I stayed with him until the end of the work day. I had plenty of time on my hands and therefore would visit many of the merchants in town. Mr. Ratliff was my favorite and the only one that made a deep and lasting impression on my life. I visited him quite often. I can still see him sitting on a stool and bent over watches working on them with a bright yellow light shining down on his work. Now that I think about it I’m sure that was very tedious work and I most definitely had to be interrupting him but Mr. Ratliff never once made me feel like any bother. In fact he taught me how to snap my fingers and to this day when I do that, I think of him. He was so very kind to me as a child and I will never forget him for that very reason. In fact every time I was in Haysi I would stop by the jeweler’s shop and send my greetings to him. I will miss doing that. Please know that I care very deeply for your loss.
