HAYSI – Fred “Buck” Yates, Jr., age 79 of Cove Road passed away Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Pikeville Medical Center in Pikeville, Kentucky. Born in Dickenson County he was a son of the late Fred and Vinie Stiltner Yates. He was a 1962 graduate of Haysi High school, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, receiving two purple hearts and Cross of Gallantry honors, a Master Mason with Clintwood Lodge 66, former captain of Dickenson County Rescue Squad, and a loved former girls softball coach. He was previously employed as a coal miner with Island Creek Coal Company and retired from John Flannagan Dam Corp of Engineers in 2002 after 18 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Steve Yates and two nephews Thumper Gotte and Randy Bean.
Survivors include, his wife Janice Moore Yates, two daughters, Theresa (John) Vance, Haysi, VA and Ruth Yates of Bristol, TN, two grandchildren Taylor (Alex) Mitchell and Jonathan Vance, one great-granddaughter, Maple Mitchell, two brothers, Chris (Tammy) Yates and Luke Yates both of Haysi, VA, six sisters, Ina (Andy) Turner, Damascus, VA, Irene (Ira) Gotte, Lois (Tom Dean) Wallace, Linda (Rocky) O’quinn, and Tina (Dewey) Bean all of Haysi, VA , Joan Epling of Kenai, Alaska and a host of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be held 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Haysi Funeral Home. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, 2023 in Yates Family Cemetery, Haysi, VA with VFW Post 7360. Pallbearers will be John Vance, Jonathan Vance, Luke Yates, Chris Yates, Ira Gotte, and Rocky O’quinn,
