Obituary for Carolyn "Sue" Atteberry (Anderson)

Carolyn S. "Sue" Atteberry, age 76, of Quincy, died Tuesday, April 12, 2022, at 3:10 pm in the Illinois Veteran's Home. Sue was born August 21, 1945, in Haysi, Virginia, the daughter of Shelby and Lillie Turner Anderson. She married Richard Atteberry on January 2, 1971, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Highland
Park, Michigan.
She graduated Haysi High School. After graduation, she moved to Suitland, Maryland and stayed with her brother W.R. and family. Sue worked at the Heck Co. Department Store, where she met Richard, who was in the Navy. They dated for some time prior to him being shipped overseas. She then moved to Michigan, near her brother Lindbergh. There, she worked at People's Drug Store and then at Grants Department Store. Sue and Richard stayed in close contact via letters. Upon receiving his order to go to Pensacola, FL as a Navy Instructor; Richard made a detour to Michigan to marry Sue then. While living in Washington D.C. their daughter Cindy and son Craig were born at the Naval Academy Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland. Once Richard retired after 20 years in service, they moved to Eldon, Missouri. They lived there for 26 years in a home they had built on 20 acres of land. Sue and Richard moved to Quincy, in October of 2004 to be near their daughter, Cindy and family.

Sue was a family type of person. She loved reunions and family dinners once a month. Game nights were held once a week with friends. Sue was an Elder, Deacon, and served on the Nominations Committee. Sunday School and Bible Study was always a norm for her. Sue and Richard were
members of Faith Presbyterian Church and First Union Congregational Church.

In addition to her husband, Sue is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Mick) Crist of Quincy; her son, Craig (Jennifer) Atteberry, of Longmont, CO; five grandchildren, Thatcher, Ziven, and Arrow Crist, and Claire and Kelvin Atteberry; three brothers, Lindbergh, Gary and Don Anderson; and a sister, Nellie Edwards.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Rose Sutherland, and two brothers, W.R. and Banner Anderson.

Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home, with Rev. Ryan Ramsey officiating.

Burial: Quincy Memorial Park, Quincy, Illinois.

Visitation: 5:00 - 7:00 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2022 at Hansen-Spear Funeral Home.
