Obituary for Lewis Ray Owens

Lewis Ray Owens, Sr. of Haysi, VA passed away on May 28, 2021 after a brief illness at age 79. He was the son of Ira and Viola Owens. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara, and sons: Lewis, Jr. (Susanna), Kevin (Lea), and Matthew (Jordan). Lewis will be dearly missed by his friends and family members, leaving behind grandsons, Ethan and Daniel, and siblings Duster, Doris, and Vera (whose daughters, Aline and Melissa, were near and dear to Lewis) as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. A lover of music and fishing, Lewis first met his wife-to-be after a fishing trip. Early in their marriage he enjoyed playing guitar and banjo with his friends. Lewis retired after 35 years with the Richmond City Police Department as a Detective. He received numerous awards and meritorious commendations during his career. Upon retirement, he fulfilled his lifelong dream to build his final home in the Virginia mountains where he grew up to once again enjoy beautiful views of nature every day with his wife. Lewis was a member of Big Ridge Presbyterian Church.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 5, 2021 in the Tacket-Owens Cemetery, Haysi, VA with Wayne Rogers officiating. Pallbearers will be Matt Owens, Kevin Owens, Lewis Owens, Ethan Owens, and Daniel Owens. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Fraternal Order of Police.
