Haysi, VA- Phillip Willis, age 81, passed from this life on November 21, 2020. He was born on August 18, 1939 to the late Ottie and Virgie (Barton) Willis. Phillip was a retired Virginia State Mining Inspector with over 30 years of service. He enjoyed his work and always said he retired too soon. He loved the outdoors and in his later years liked nothing better than watching the birds and squirrels he fed on his front porch and a village of groundhogs who lived on the hill beside his house. He named each groundhog and his favorites were Brenda and Scar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant brothers, Bluford and Buford and sister, Irene Willis Fuller.

Survivors include a daughter, Carolea (Jerry) Newsome of Haysi, a son, Phillip Dewayne (Sherry) Willis of Breaks, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Miranda Newsome of Haysi, Shaun (Kasey) Newsome of Clintwood and Rylee and Haylee, step grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Tonya Dawson of Sevierville, TN and Ava, Nadia and Ivana and a brother, Thurston (Kathleen) Willis of Belleville, MI.
Phillip will be dearly missed by his family, a host of friends and his devoted caregivers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Haysi Funeral Home with Darrell Milgrim officiating. Burial will follow in Rebecca Willis Cemetery, Haysi, VA.
