Obituary for James “Marshall” Anderson
James “Marshall” Anderson of Russell Prater finished life’s race on May 9, 2020. Born July 18, 1937 in Page, Virginia in Buchanan County, Marshall was a 1955 graduate of Grundy High School where he was an exceptional football player. He received a sports scholarship for college locally, but elected to try out and “walk onto” the college team at Vanderbilt University in Nashville where he studied for a while before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. After an honorable discharge, he returned to Buchanan County to marry his high school sweetheart, Janice C. Phipps, to whom he was blessed to share life with for almost 63 years of marriage. Marshall was a brilliant, creative man who was skilled at many trades, but he took pride in being a coal miner and coal operator in the region. He worked many mining jobs over the years, enjoying the work of fire boss. He was a miners’ EMT and local EMT trainer, who was credited for saving several lives in mining and other injuries. He also spent time as a long-haul truck driver, carpenter, local businessman and was a proud sports plane pilot. Marshall was an artistic craftsman skilled in welding and woodworking, as well as mechanics and drafting, who loved to spend time with family and friends in his shop. He was an avid storyteller who loved a circle of friends or family to spin yarns with. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, nature’s creatures and gardening. Marshall was baptized United Methodist and was known as someone who knew his Bible well and had an awe for his loving, pardoning God. He loved his family and dear friends to which he was very dedicated. He had great pride in his children and grandchildren, always ready to share about their latest accomplishments and endeavors. Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, Charley W. Anderson and Venta Ratliff Anderson Edwards, his brother Jerry M. Anderson and his sister Barbara D. Anderson Marshall. He is survived by his devoted wife, Janice C. Phipps Anderson, his son Charlie Anderson (Rhonda) and daughter Regina “Gina” Anderson-Cloud (Bert); five grandchildren; Alexandra Gurley (Matthew), Mackenzie Anderson, Danielle Cloud, Kayana Cloud and Trae Cloud; and two great-grandchildren A’miracle and Skyler (Gurley); as well as several beloved nieces and nephews and cousins.
Consistent with state Covid-19 restrictions, friends and loved ones are invited to a visitation at Coleman’s Methodist Chapel on Prater on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. A graveside funeral service open to friends and family will be held at the James M. Owens Cemetery on Rakes Ridge on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Gina Anderson-Cloud, senior pastor at Fredericksburg United Methodist Church and daughter will preside. In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations to Coleman’s Methodist Chapel and/or the Wellmont/Ballad Hospice House, 280 Steeles Rd, Bristol, TN 37620.
