Obituary for Johnny Carter Viers

Haysi, VA- Johnny Carter Viers, age 78, went to sleep in the Lord’s arms on Monday, March 16, 2020 at his home. Born July 21, 1941, he was the youngest child of the late R.D. and Vadna Turner Viers. Johnny worked for Chevrolet in Michigan before returning to Haysi to open up an appliance store with his wife, Joyce. They had several businesses in Haysi over the years. Johnny also drove a school bus for many years and was a Deputy for the Dickenson County Sherriff’s Office. He enjoyed working his mountaintop farm and was an avid hunter. Johnny was a member and Deacon of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church and previously served as Clerk of the Sandlick Primitive Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Joyce Ann Viers on November 17, 2019, a son, Ronald Dean Viers, sisters, Trula Colley, Maggie Singleton Rasnake, Edith Viers, Elsie Compton, Olive Watson and Patsy Viers and brothers, Walter and Charlie Viers.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Kelli Viers, granddaughter, Melodye (Brad) Hill, great-grandchildren, Josie and Julian Hill, a brother, Pridemore (Laura) Viers, sisters, Fannie (Milton) O’quin, Mary Sue (Palmer) Woods, sisters-in-law, Sue Rose, Judy (Larry) Compton, Pauline Stanley, Alfreda (Kristy) Mullins, brother-in-law, John (Becky) Turner and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elders Jim O’quinn, Roger Rose, Brian Moore, Shawn and Jeff Dotson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m.Thursday, March 19, in R.D. Viers Cemetery, Haysi, VA. Pallbearers will be Kent and Keith Woods, Michael Rose, Jason and Brett Compton, John Turner, Gilmer Childress and Tim Wampler. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Viers and deacons of Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church. The family will receive friends after 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home prior to funeral service at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Sandlick Primitive Baptist Church.
