FONSO F. SUTHERLAND
Haysi, VA- Fonso F. Sutherland, age 92 of Lick Creek, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at his home. Born in Dickenson County, he was a son of the late Wade H. and Nannie Wright Sutherland. He was a member of Sandlick Presbyterian Church and a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII. He worked as a supply clerk for Clinchfield Coal Company at Splashdam and retired in 1992 after 30 years as Post Master at the Haysi Post office. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three children, David Grant Sutherland, Thomas Wade Sutherland and infant daughter, Jane Kathleen Sutherland, a son-in-law, Stan Hicks, brothers, Henry, Brady, Woodrow, Boone and Eli, sisters, Zella Freeman, Gladys Sutherland and Helen Owens.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Clara Fields Sutherland, two sons, Timothy (Robin) Sutherland and Philip (Jedda) Sutherland both of Haysi, a daughter, Amy Hicks of TN and a sister, Jackie Keene of Oakwood, grandchildren, Heath, Nick, Aaron and Michelle Sutherland and Nichole Senter and Dereck Hicks, 7 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2019 at Haysi Funeral Home with Pastor David Cummings officiating. The family will receive friends after 6:00 p.m. on Friday prior to funeral services. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 9, at D.B. Sutherland Cemetery, Haysi, VA. Pallbearers will be Wayne, Ben, Rhett, Dan, Mark, Bob, Sam, and Jeff Sutherland, Rick and Gary Keene and Randy Mitchell.Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
