Obituary for Steven Allen Hagy

Steven Allen Hagy

Hurley, VA – Steven Allen Hagy, age 47, departed this life peacefully at his home on September 26, 2018 with his loving companion and long-time friends by his side. He was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma multiforme grade IV brain tumor on April 22, 2018. He fought the disease hard, enduring extensive clinical trial radiation and chemotherapy treatments at Duke University Medical Center. His response to the oncologist when asked to take part in a clinical trial was “If it will help somebody else someday, I’ll do it.” He was a kind-hearted man who always thought of others first.
He was born October 11, 1970 to Earnest and Kathy (Gooslin) Hagy of Hurley. Survivors in addition to his parents are his children, who were his whole world, Kyle, Keaton, Madison and McKenzie Hagy, all of Hurley; brother Keith Hagy and companion Nancy Whitely of Deskins; nephew Bryan Hagy; aunts Patsy (Gooslin) Hale and Betty (Hagy) Ogle; uncle David Hagy; numerous cousins that he loved dearly.
He was proceeded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leonard and Mae (Allen) Gooslin, paternal grandparents Elmer and Ruby (Clevinger) Hagy, aunt Bernice (Vandyke) Hagy; uncles Roger Hagy, Jerry Hagy and Denver Hagy.
Steve had a brilliant mind. He was a highly-skilled welder, fabricator, electrician, mechanic, and machinist. He was an innovator, always looking for ways to redesign a process to make it more efficient. He was employed at Excel Mining Systems for 21 years and employed at SunCoke Energy for the past 6 years, working right up until the day before his diagnosis in April 2018. When you met him, you knew you had a friend for life. He loved to tell stories and reminisce about the good old days and loved talking about his children. He was a hard-working, dedicated, true family man.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Hurley High School with Bobby Conn, Bill Neely and Roger Street officiating. Burial will follow in the Hagy Cemetery at Deskins.
Pallbearers will be Clinton and Freddie Hurley, Chris and Brian Allen, Tommy Harmon, Mike Melvin, Jody Bowman, Kyle Hagy and Scotty and Derek Jackson.
Honorary pallbearers are Will Vandyke, Ashley Wade, Ryan Lester, Billie Campbell, Larry David Ratliff, Patrick Owens, Paige Campbell, Sandee Deel, Haley Yates, Dr. D. Patel and staff, the nurses at BGH Home Health, the nurses at Legacy Hospice, former employees of Excel Mining Systems and his co-workers at SunCoke Energy; Caregivers Barbie Vandyke, Kristi Rose, Megan Belcher, Mike Melvin, Sue Rose, Patricia Stacy and Roger Street.
The family will receive friends after 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at Hurley High School where a service will be held at 6:00 p.m. Steve’s friends and family want to express their sincere appreciation for the prayers, generosity and expressions of kindness shown to Steve during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family. Online condolences may be sent to www.haysifuneral.com. Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
God saw him getting tired,
and a cure was not to be.
So He put His arms around him,
and whispered “Come to Me.”
With tearful eyes we watched
him slowly fade away.
Although we loved him dearly,
we could not make him stay.
A golden heart stopped beating,
hard working hands put to rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us,
He only takes the best.
