Obituary for Emma Jean Phillips

Emma Jean Phillips

EMMA JEAN PHILLIPS, 89, died May 8, 2017 surrounded by her family. Born July 22, 1927, in Haysi, VA, the daughter of Mike and Lottie Lyall.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, John Phillips. Emma Jean and John moved to Detroit, MI in 1952 to work and raise their family. They returned to Haysi, VA in 1978, where she lived the rest of her life.
Everyone who knew her, loved her. Her membership in ElysJoy Church and the fellowship with friends and family was the joy of her life. She was a member of the Haysi VFW, and she helped with many charities, especially the Kid’s Fishing Day.
Loving mother of Johnny (Denise) Phillips of Macomb, MI and Gilda “Jill” Scott of Sevierville, TN. Loving step-mother to Cecelia Osborne of Flat Rock, MI and John Phillips, Jr of Interlachen, FL and the late Billy Phillips. Adoring grandmother to Pamela, Jason, Frieda, Rita, Rhonda, Jeffrey, Trish, Michael, Lisa, Tina, Kandi, Sharlene, Angela and the late Bobby Dewayne; as well as many great and great-great grandchildren. Dear sister of Eugene Lyall of Hanover, WV.
Emma Jean is also survived by her loving companion, Wesley Thomas of Haysi, VA, who she lived with for 22 years; and their precious pet Elvis.
Per her wishes, there will be no funeral services. There will be a small gathering at the Mullins Family Cemetery at a later date. The family asks that you spend time with your children, take a walk with your loved one and “drive careful,” as that’s what Emma Jean would ask of you. Memorial tributes can be directed to ElysJoy Ministries, 5219 Bartlick Rd, Haysi, VA, 24256.
