Haysi, VA- Norman Reid Mullins, age 89, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. Born in McClure, he was a son of the late William James and Virgie Owens Mullins. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, he taught at Haysi High School for 33 years also Dickenson Memorial High School and Clincho High School making a total of 38 years. He was a member and Elder of Bartlick Presbyterian Church, chairman of the Dickenson County Republican party for 16 years. Norman also started the football and track program at Haysi High School and little league baseball program in Haysi, he coached for 26 years and served as Mayor of Haysi for 26 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his mother and father-in–law, Clay and Hallie Taylor, brothers, William Mullins Jr. and Kyle Burns Mullins and son-in-law, Jeff O’quinn.
Survivors include his wife Alice T. Mullins, a son, Billy (Lisa) Mullins of Lynchburg, daughters, Norma Jane (Kerry) Hay and Allison O’quinn both of Haysi, grandchildren, Taylor and Justin Hay, Reid O’quinn, Jonnie Lynn Mullins and fiancé John Reuther and Joshua Mullins, five brothers, James (Allene) Mullins of Manassas, Bob (Pat) Mullins of Grottoes, Carroll (Janet) Mullins of Flatrock, NC, Harold Mullins of Abingdon, two sisters, Wilma (Delbert) Wood of Nashville, TN and Rita (Morris) Hawkins of Kingsport, TN and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. Friday, January 20, 2017 at Haysi Funeral Home with Elder John R. Whitner and Pastors John Whitner and David Cummings officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Anderson Cemetery, Edwards Ridge. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be past Council members and former ballplayers he coached. Military Graveside rites will be conducted.
