Obituary for Elmer Dewey Wood

Elmer Dewey Wood
Elder Elmer Dewey Wood
Haysi, VA – Elder Elmer Dewey Wood went to be with Jesus, March 5, 2016. He was born July 6, 1933 making his stay on this earth 82 years, seven months, and 28 days. He was the son of the late Henry Harrison and Judy Viers Wood. He was married to Joyce Kathleen Turner on January 21, 1956 and to this union was born one son, Steve Lane Wood. He was preceded in death by his loving companion of 46 years, while she was alive you rarely saw one without the other. He leaves to mourn his passing his son, Lane Wood and his wife, Gail of Haysi, his grandchildren, Susan and her husband, Blake of Haysi; Steven and his wife Lindsey and his great grandson, Parker of Wise, VA. He was the youngest of ten children: preceding him in death were: Robert, Ayers, Toy, Pearl, Swanson, and Englin. Left to mourn his passing are: Andy Wood of Haysi, Gertrude Owens of Prater, VA, Laura Viers and her husband Pridemore Viers of Haysi, and a sister in law, Mazie Wood of Haysi. He also leaves to mourn his loss: a sister in law Gail Turner of Haysi, a brother in law Fayne Turner and his wife, Brenda of Belleville, MI and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and brothers and sisters in Christ. He served his country after being drafted in 1953, being stationed in France on active duty from August 13, 1953 to June 13, 1955. He was honorably discharged from the US Army Reserves on August 20, 1961. He served his Lord for over thirty six years after being baptized with his son on August 19, 1979. He was a member of the Little Sarah Church of Jesus Christ, Old Regular Baptist faith and order. He was ordained as a minister by the Little Sarah Church on February 16, 1985. He served as Moderator of The Lebanon Church, The Georges Fork Church, The Little Hope Church and Assistant Moderator of the Little Sarah Church and others during life in the church. He was always the same anywhere or anytime you would meet him, his message was one of repentance and he genuinely cared for his brothers, his sisters, the congregation and all people everywhere. Dad lived his life simply, he tried hard to teach us all the things they didn’t teach in school. College boys needed a little extra help. He had a special relationship with his daughter in law (he would have dropped the in law) because she was the daughter he never had and she cared for him as if he was her father. He loved his grandchildren as only a grandfather can and celebrated their every accomplishment. When Parker came along he was thrilled every time he saw him and bragged on him often. This morning the clouds opened up and there stood Jesus. He will rest high upon that mountain because his life on earth is done. May we all live for Jesus and all meet again on that resurrection morning. Written by his broken hearted son and his spiritual brother in Christ.
