Haysi, Va – Daniel Boone Sutherland, age 94 of Lick Creek passed away Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at his home. Born in Dickenson County he was a son of the late Wade H. and Nannie Wright Sutherland. He was a member, Elder and Sunday School Superintendent of Sandlick Presbyterian Church for about 60 years. A retired coal miner and President of Local Union 7170 of UMWA for many years, he served in the US Army from 1943-1946 and served on the Board of Supervisors of Dickenson County. Mr. Sutherland was also a member of Black Lung Association of Virginia. He loved God, his family and his garden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Henry, Woodrow, Brady and Eli; sisters, Zella Friedmon, Gladys Sutherland and Helen Owens and infant brother and sister, George and Beulah.
Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Irene Edwards Sutherland; a daughter, Bonnie (Edgar) Owens of Wise, VA; sons, Daniel (Diana) Sutherland III of Gallatin, TN and Ben (Angela) Sutherland of Haysi, VA; a sister, Jackie Keene of Oakwood, VA; a brother, Fonso (Clara) Sutherland of Haysi, VA; grandsons, Daniel (Tammie) Sutherland IV and Devon (Edie) Sutherland both of Hendersonville, TN, Darren Sutherland of Portland, OR, Christopher (Beth) Sutherland of Weaverville, NC, Courtney (Britney) Sutherland of Haysi, VA, Joshua (Kristin Brooks) Owens of Church Hill, TN and Jordan Owens of Bristol, VA, and great grandchildren, Garrett, Emily, Daniel V, Addyson, Greta Irene and Eden.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2015 at Haysi Funeral Home with Pastor David Cummings officiating. Burial will follow in the A.J. Edwards Cemetery, Birchleaf, VA. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons of Sandlick Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends after 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home where an evening service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sandlick Presbyterian Church, PO Box 136, Birchleaf, VA 24220.
