Obituary for Claude Vandyke

Haysi, VA - Claude Vandyke, age 90, died Friday, September 13, 2013 at Johnson City Medical Center following a long illness. Born January 25, 1923 in the Dry Fork section of Buchanan County, he was the son of the late Grover C. Vandyke and Maye Childress Vandyke. He was a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA Harman Local #7025. He loved the outdoors and gardening and loved to fish. He enlisted in the Army March 20, 1943, later serving as a Private First Class with Battery A of the 54th Coast Artillery Battalion at Fort Shafter's engineering division on Oahu, HI during WWII. He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal for his service. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 3 brothers, George Vandyke, Perry “Pete” Vandyke and Guy Vandyke and 2 sisters, Pearl Runyon and Lucy Suttle.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Allene Coleman Vandyke, a son Dennis (Mary) Vandyke of Clintwood, a daughter Jane Vandyke Moore of Haysi, one Grandson Scott (Gabriela) Moore of Coeburn, and a great-granddaughter Grace, step-grandchildren Jason Hicks and Sonja Fleming of Clintwood, Tonya Gentry of Wise, Shane Hicks of Dryden, VA, Gina Nichols of Mayfield, KY, and Ginger Deel of Seattle, WA, 10 step-great-grandchildren and 2 step-great-great-grandchildren, 1 sister Mary Cook of Vansant and 2 brothers Granville “Dan” Vandyke of Belfast and Fred Vandyke of Chesapeake, VA and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted 6:00 p.m. Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Haysi Funeral Home. Graveside military rites will be held on Monday, September 16 at the H.H. Coleman Cemetery, Haysi, VA with VFW Post #7360. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. A visitation will be held on Sunday following the funeral service.
